The 13th R.L. Chopra Memorial Creative Writing and Book Discussion Competition (2019)

The 13th R.L.Chopra Memorial Creative Writing and Book Discussion Competition was organized by New Era Public School, Mayapuri on 26th July, 2019. This literary event was instituted in the memory of Late Shri R.L.Chopra, the founder chairman of New Era Public School. Mr. Chopra, an avid reader himself, was of the firm belief that reading leads to refinement and enrichment.

This one day literary festival witnessed an overwhelming participation of 40 schools. The occasion was graced by the Found Principal and Director Mrs. Usha Chopra, who welcomed all the participants and the Principal Mrs. Vandana Chawla.

The book chosen in English was The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. It presents a story on betrayal, guilt and redemption. The author successfully treads through a complex terrain of family, society and relationships. Khaled Hosseini has brought forth the socio-economic conditions in Afghanistan demonstrating the disparity between the majority Sunni Muslims and the minority Shi??a Muslims, how people discriminate against each other based on physical features and religious beliefs and the experience of an immigrant when one attempts to leave their homeland.

In the Creative Writing Competition, one student from each participating school had to express their thoughts on a topic/question, based on the selected novel, given on the spot in 600 words approximately. The aim is to allow students to engage with the novel deeply and test their analytical and critical skills, as they go about expressing their thoughts on the given topic/question.

On the other hand, in the Book Discussion Round, the participating students were divided into groups and asked questions on the novel by the moderators. Subsequently, six students made it to the final round. Rena Malik of DPS, R K Puram, Nitish Chauhan of Balwant Rai Mehta Vidya Mandir and Manin Suri of K R Manglam School bagged the First, Second and Third prizes respectively. Ms. Shabri Choudhury and Ms Sushmita Chaterjee, both working in the publishing industry and currently working as editors with Scholastic India Pvt. Ltd. judged the Book Discussion Round in English.

The participants displayed an in-depth understanding of the issues raised in the novel. This one day long literary festival reasserts the significance of literature in our lives and helps us to understand the world better.
